Freshman Emily Newton Checks Back in From Europe

Freshman Emily Newton Checks Back in From Europe

Emily's trip to Europe has come to a close as she writes in for the last time before traveling back to the States. Read her closing thoughts.

Well my travels are slowly coming to a close. This last week in Alicante has been more like a vacation. I enjoyed the beaches and climbed up to the castle on a hill overlooking the ocean. I played "voley playa" with a new friend from California against some Alicante locals. I couldn't have asked for a better last week. I head back to Madrid tomorrow for my flight back to the United States.

In my last few hours in Alicante, Spain, I reflect on my experience so far. I cannot believe that my eight weeks of summer study are coming to a close. This cultural, social, and educational experience exceeded my expectations.  I am so glad I took this opportunity to travel to Europe and study abroad. I learned so much about economics, Spanish, culture, people, and myself. I have met wonderful, adventurous people from all over the world and made lasting friendships. I improved my Spanish speaking skills, learned about international business, and discovered some great things about travels.

¡Hasta luego España!

Freshman volleyball player Emily Newton's travels in Europe have continued. She's checked in for the third time and is still loving every minute of her trip and study program.

Her journey started in Germany but she is now in Spain.

Read about her latest adventures below.

Travels continue in Spain! Learning Spanish in Madrid has been incredible. During the week, I have four hours of class a day. The rest of the day I explore the city and practice by speaking with locals. The museums and landmarks in Spain exceed expectations. I feel like a local as I ride the metro or take a Pilates class at a local gym. I also discovered how small the world really is when I ran into some students from my high school! Over a weekend, another CMU student, Julia and I spontaneously traveled to Salamanca by train. We spent the weekend exploring a new and very different city.

I just arrived to the beach town on the Mediterranean called Alicante. I am studying here for two weeks while enjoying the beaches and playing "voley playa" (beach volleyball). Can't wait to play!

I am looking forward to my last two weeks in Spain!
