Tartans Place Third at Annual Invitational

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's cross country team hosted the Carnegie Mellon University Cross Country Invitational in Schenley Park on Saturday, October 9 after a day or so of intermittent showers with a light rain falling at the start of the 5k race. The Tartans placed third out of 14 scored teams with Division I Duquesne University and Division II Clarion University finishing first and second.

The Tartans were led by freshman Avery Tompkins (Kingsley, Pa. / Scranton Preparatory) who finished 10ther overall in 20 minutes and 10 seconds. Tompkins was followed by freshman Megha Korpol (Ashburn, Va. / Rock Ridge) in 19th place in 20:48.5.

The third finisher for the Tartans was graduate student Megan Rice (Fairfax, Va. / Fairfax) while freshman Norah Czajka (Penfield, N.Y. / Penfield) was fourth for the team. Rice's time of 21:00.1 was a career-best on the course and placed her 22nd while Czajka finished 24th in 21:04.0.

Junior Kavya Tummalapalli (Plainsboro, NJ / West Windsor-Plainsboro High School) finished off the team scoring for the Tartans with a 30th-place finish in 21:19.3.

The Tartans will next compete at the Oberlin College Interregional Rumble on Saturday, October 16. The race is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m.
