This Week in Tartans History - April 5-11, 2018

With our 2020 seasons cut short, we are honoring our spring athletes with a look back at their many accomplishments during their time as Tartans. We hope you enjoy celebrating these past performances.

Women’s Tennis

The women’s tennis team, then ranked ninth nationally, traveled to 14th-ranked University of Mary Washington and defeated the Eagles, 5-4, for its 14th win of the season.

The Tartans led 2-1 after doubles play following an 8-5 win from Vinaya Rao and Melissa Strome at the second spot. Rao accounted for another team point after winning 6-3, 6-4 at third singles and then Hannah Rosenfield broke the 4-all match with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory at sixth singles for the Tartan win.

"The match was being played inside on three courts as it was happening simultaneously with the men’s match," recalls head coach Andrew Girard. "Late in doubles Melissa sprained her ankle. She was able to finish and win the doubles match, but was unable to go in singles at #5 so we had to pull her from the lineup."

"We won two of the first three singles matches to go up 4-2," continued Girard. "Mary Washington won at #4 and #5 to even the match at 4-4. First year Hannah Rosenfield had moved into the lineup when we had to pull Melissa. The #6 player for Mary Washington had a very unique and tricky game. Hannah lost the first set, we made some strategy adjustments and she quickly won the second set 6-2. At this point everyone is watching her match. Hannah rallied back from down 3-4 in the third set for a thrilling 6-4 victory. A clutch performance in a high pressure situation."

Men’s Tennis

The men’s tennis team, then ranked ninth nationally, traveled to 14th-ranked University of Mary Washington and defeated the Eagles, 6-3. The Tartans fell behind 2-1 following doubles play and then took five of six singles matches to secure the win. Ray Boppana won the first point in singles play with 6-0, 6-2 victory at third singles with Robert Levin tabbing the last. Levin won at fifth singles, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (4), 1-0 (7).

General News

The Student-Athlete Advisory Council held its eighth annual Field Day for the Tartan community which was organized by Isaac Mills of the men’s track and field team for the second consecutive year. More than 70 children from the Pittsburgh community came to Carnegie Mellon and participated in events that included sport stations spread around the athletics facilities.

“We are all so lucky to be student-athletes at CMU and Field Day is a great way to give back to the community,” said Michelle Karabin, the organizer of Field Day the past two years. “We can share our love for our sports with children and watch their faces light up as they participate.  Field Day has been my favorite event at CMU.”

Community Service Event

Members of the football, women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and women’s swimming and diving teams participated in Carnegie Mellon University’s 1000plus Day of Service. Activities included cleaning up wooded areas near parks for youth to play, uncovering pools and preparing them for future swimmers at community camps, and sorting clothes at a local church.
