Tartans Finish Fourth at Total Performance Invitational

(GAMBIER, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team finished fourth at the Total Performance Invitational hosted by Kenyon College. The meet concluded on Saturday with the Tartans accumulating 712.5 points.

The 200-yard medley relay opened Saturday's meet with a fifth-place time as senior Josh Lucheon (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic), freshman Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep), sophomore Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) and freshman Kevin Steinhouse (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) touched in 1:31.02.

Sophomore Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) swam a season-best time of 4:39.89 in the 500-yard freestyle preliminaries and during the evening finished 20th overall with a time of 4:46.98.

The 200-yard backstroke saw freshman Michael DiBacco (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) finished 16th overall in a time of 1:53.28, as he knocked off more than four seconds from his previous best. Junior Jay Jin (Canton, Mich./Canton) also swam in the finals of the 200-yard backstroke as he finished 19th in 1:56.21.

Mehta won the B-final heat of the 100-yard butterfly, touching in a career-best 49.96. Walsh and junior Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) were also in the B-final and finished 15th and 17th in times of 50.87 and 51.14, respectively.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, sophomore Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) touched in 2:05.25 to finish 12th overall, while junior Philip Farr (Campbell, Calif./Bellarmine College) finished 14th in 2:06.24.

Steinhouse finished the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 46.33 to place 15th, while Jin finished first in the C-final of the 200-yard IM with a new team best time of 1:55.02.

To close the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Mehta, Walsh, Geier and Steinhouse completed the event in 3:05.54.

The Tartans will next head to Florida for their annual training trip and return to competition on Saturday, January 17 when they host Westminster College and SUNY Geneseo at 1:00 p.m.
