McHenry Scores Career-High 21 in 89-66 Victory at Thiel

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Freshman Amanda McHenry (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) poured in a career-high 21 points as the Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team defeated Thield College 89-66 on the road Saturday, November 24. The Tartans improve to 3-1 on the season as the Tomcats drop to 1-3.

McHenry shot 6-of-8 from behind the arc off the bench for the Tartans and scored 12 points in the second half to lead the Tartans to their highest point total of the season.

Carnegie Mellon never trailed in the game and went up 11-4 at the 14:12 mark after sophomore Gabrielle West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) stole the ball and hit a layup.

The Tomcats rallied to get within one point at 13-12 with 9:46 to go in the period behind six points by Riian McCray. Freshman Lindsay Poss (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) then scored two baskets and McHenry hit her first three-pointer to stretch the lead to eight over a minute-and-a-half span as the Tartans went on to a 45-28 halftime lead.

A 17-4 run midway through the second period gave the Tartans their largest advantage of 28 points (71-43). Sophomore Chandler Caufield (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) hit two three-pointers while senior Emily Peel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) scored four of her 19 points during the run.

Freshman Liza Otto (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) just missed recording a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds while Caufield and West also tallied nine points.

The Tartans shared the rock, assisting on 22 of 33 baskets for the game as Otto led with five.

Both the Tartans and Tomcats shot 39% from the floor but the Tartans capitalized on 21 Tomcat turnovers to score 27 points. The Tartans also outrebounded their opponent for the fourth game pulling down 50 missed shots to the Tomcats 32.

The Tartans will be in action again when they travel to Penn State Altoona on Monday, November 26 for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
