Tartans Hold Second Straight Opponent Under 30 Points in 61-29 Victory

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team won its fourth straight game Wednesday night at home against Hiram College, 61-29. The Tartans improved to 5-1 while the Terriers dropped their second game of the year and are now 3-2.

Junior Jacquie Shaw (Portland, Ore./Grant) scored on the Tartans' first possession before Hiram rattled off seven straight to lead 7-2 at the 15:38 mark.

Carnegie Mellon then scored 10 straight with six points coming from the free throw line to take a 12-7 lead with 9:33 to go in the period and never looked back. The Tartans led by as many as 14 in the period when sophomore MacKenzie Boyd (Plano, Texas/Plano West) hit a free throw in the last two minutes before Hiram scored five to cut the deficit to 29-20 at the break.

The Tartans started the second half with a 15-point run shooting 7-for-14 over the first six minutes to take a 44-20 lead.

The Terriers last made field goal came with 12:44 to play when Marisa Thomas hit a three-pointer to make the score 46-25. The Tartans would then hold the visitors to four additional points as they shot 17.5% from the field and 40% from the free throw line for the game.

The game marked the second straight that the Tartan defense held its opponent to a 17% field-goal percentage and less than 30 total points.

Senior Emily Peel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) led the Tartans with 17 points and seven rebounds as freshman Liza Otto (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) recorded her first double-double of the year with 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. The six-footer also dished out a career-high seven assists. Sophomore Chandler Caufield (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) hauled in a career-high eight rebounds while Shaw finished the game tying a career-high in assists with six.

The Tartans will be back in action on Saturday, December 1 as they host John Carroll University at 1:00 p.m.
