Shaw Thrills Crowd With Career-High 31 Points, But Tartans Fall in Overtime

(PITTSBURGH Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team continued University Athletic Association (UAA) action Friday, January 18 with a 67-60 overtime loss to the University of Rochester. Junior Jacquie Shaw (Portland, Ore./Grant) scored a career-high 31 points, 27 after halftime, for the Tartans, who moved to 10-5 and 2-2 in UAA play. The Yellowjackets improved 11-4, 3-1.

After falling behind 34-15 at halftime, the Tartans rallied put together a 16-0 run midway through the second half to cut the deficit to 45-44 over the next five minutes.  During the stretch, five different Tartans scored with Shaw leading the pack with seven of her 31 points.

Shaw continued her hot streak, hitting back-to-back jumpers two minutes later to propel the Tartans to their first lead of the game, 50-48, with 4:57 to play in regulation. From there, the lead changed hands four more times and the score was tied on three occasions before the teams headed into overtime tied at 55-55.

With 22 second left in regulation, it was Shaw that evened the score.  The Tartans had a chance to take the lead with two seconds remaining, but missed the front end of a one-and-one and the teams headed to the extra period.

In overtime, Rochester's Loren Wagner broke a 58-58 score with a layup and then Jackie Walker connected from long range to give the visitors a 63-58 lead with 50 seconds remaining. The Yellowjackets held on for the 67-60 victory.

The start of the game saw the Yellowjackets jump out to a 14-4 advantage seven minutes in.  Carnegie Mellon answered with an 8-2 run, cutting Rochester's lead down to four at 16-12 with 10:22 to play in the half.  The Yellowjackets then scored 18 of the next 21 points to take a 34-15 lead into the break.

After shooting 23% from the floor in the first half, Carnegie Mellon rebounded to shot 58% in the second half and 37% for the game.  Rochester ended the night shooting 36% for the game.  Behind Shaw's career-high, freshman Lindsay Poss (Poolesville, Md.) scored in double figures for the Tartans with 10 points. Freshman Liza Otto (Glastonbury, Conn.) tied a career-high with 13 rebounds to lead the Tartans on the glass.

Wagner led Rochester with 14 points and a game-high 19 rebounds while Breanna Madrazo finished with 12 points.

The Tartans will continue UAA play on Sunday, as they host Emory University at Skibo Gymnasium.  Tip is slated for 2:00 p.m.
