Poss's Career Night Not Enough as Tartans Fall to #7 Washington

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team fell to the hands of #7 Washington University on Friday, January 25, 73-57 in Skibo Gymnasium. The Tartans were led by freshman Lindsay Poss's (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) career night from the field and are now 10-7 on the season and 2-4 in University Athletic Association play.

Offensive rebounds and points off turnovers helped the Bears (15-2, 5-1) score their first 20 points where they led 20-10 with eleven minutes gone by. Back-to-back three-pointers by Maddy Scheppers that ended a 12-3 run were the only points not scored following an offensive rebound or Tartan turnover.

The Tartans pulled back within five points on three occasions in the half with the first coming with 4:25 to go after a layup by freshman Mathea Tenwalde (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial). Poss contributed two baskets, a three-pointer from the top of the key and a baseline jumper, as the Tartans shot 4-for-6 to pull the score to 25-20.

The Bears led by six at the break, 34-28, scoring 13 second chance points after hauling in 14 offensive rebounds.

The trend continued for the Bears in the second half who turned 28 offensive boards into 27 points for the game.

After the Bears pushed their advantage back to double digits at 45-35 following a trey by Lucy Montgomery, the Tartans clawed to within four points with 10:55 to go. Senior Emily Peel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) started the 7-1 run with a jumper before Poss hit a three-pointer and freshman Amanda McHenry (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) scored on a jumper after her own steal.

The Bears then knocked down five of their season-high 10 three-pointers to close the game, leading by as many as 16 points.

Poss led the Tartans tying a career-high with 13 points, making a career-high three three-pointers. Peel finished with her 13th double figure game with 11 points while Otto led on the glass with 10 rebounds.

Montgomery led the Bears off the bench with 15 points as Scheppers and Nishi Tavernier each scored 10.

The Tartans were outrebounded for just the second time this season as the Bears pulled down 51 missed shots to the Tartans' 33.

Carnegie Mellon will next host the University of Chicago (6-11, 2-4) on Sunday, January 27 at 2:00 p.m. in Skibo Gymnasium.
