Murphy Scores 29 in 74-58 Win Against Grove City

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team defeated Grove City College, 74-58, on Tuesday, November 25 in Skibo Gymnasium. The Tartans, now 5-1, were led by three players in double figures.

The lead changed hands nine times in the first half before Carnegie Mellon used a 12-2 run to end the period and lead 43-34 at the break. Sophomore Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va./McLean) led the Tartans with 21 first-half points, as she made all 10 of her attempts from inside the paint. Junior Lindsay Poss (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) scored 11 first-half points, making two from behind the arc, as she led the 12-2 run with six points.

Grove City shot 46.9% from the floor in the first half but struggled in the second, making just five baskets on 17 attempts. The Wolverines had a field-goal drought of more than 14 minutes, scoring only on free throws (11-of-12), allowing the Tartans to lead by as many as 20 points.

Murphy finished the game with a season-high 29 points and maintained her season shooting percentage of .716. The post also grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots.

Poss tallied 12 points while junior forward Liza Otto (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) scored 10 points and dished out a season-high six assists. The Tartans assisted on 21 of 29 made baskets as freshman Anna Novak (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) also collected a season-high five assists.

Grove City was led by Kelsey Shirey's 16 points and Cayley McClean's eight rebounds.

The Tartans return to action on Saturday, November 29 at the Marietta College Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Tournament when they face Denison University at 7:30 p.m.
