Strong Shooting Effort Propels Tartans to 63-41 Win at Grove City

(GROVE CITY, Pa.) - Freshman Catherine Or (Los Angeles, Calif. / Marlborough School) scored a season-best 20 points while senior Caitlyn Clendenin (Bethesda, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase) recorded her sixth straight game in double figures and her second double-double of the season to lead the Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team to a 63-41 victory on the road against Grove City College on Tuesday, December 7. The Tartans are now 4-2 overall while the Wolverines drop to 4-3.

Or was once again efficient from the floor, making 8-of-12 attempts, while the team shot 45.5% to overcome a season-high tying 24 turnovers in the win. The team shooting percentage was the second highest for the squad for the year.

The Tartans opened the game with a three-pointer by senior Leah Weslock (Howell, Mich. / Howell) who was 2-of-2 from behind the arc and finished with 10 points. Clendenin scored the next two baskets for the Tartans via layups to put the visitors ahead 7-2 before Grove City answered with five points to knot the score at 7-7 early in the period.

Carnegie Mellon ran out to a 14-7 lead over the next two minutes before leading by 10 at the first break. Or scored seven points in the first period while Clendenin tallied seven of her 14 points for the game in the opening frame.

The Tartans forced the Wolverines into seven turnovers in the second period and a nine percent shooting effort to explode out to a 36-14 lead.

The third period was similar with the Tartans using a 15-9 edge to lead 51-23 going into the final frame. The Wolverines made just four shots in the third quarter while the Tartans made six baskets from the field and three free throws.

The Tartans scored 42 of their points in the paint and converted 27 Wolverine turnovers into 27 points.

Or led all scorers with 20 points as Clendenin finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Clendenin and sophomore Megan Matsko (Baltimore, Md. / Mount de Sales Academy) each had four assists with Matsko also grabbing nine boards.

Grove City was led by Jaden Davinsizer's six points while four others scored five.

The Tartans will next host Geneva College on Monday, December 13 at 5:30 p.m.
