Tartans Just Miss Road Win at Emory

(ATLANTA, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team nearly stopped an eight-game skid against Emory University before the Eagles hit a game-winning layup as time expired to take a 68-66 home win on Friday, January 13. The Tartans are now 9-4 for the season and 0-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Eagles move to 9-2 and 1-1.

How it Happened

  • The Tartans were in the lead by three at the end of the first period after Emory hit their third three-pointer of the quarter and second straight to cut the score to 18-15.
  • The Tartans trailed by five points at halftime after an 8-2 run to finish the final three minutes and 41 seconds.
  • Freshman Savannah Gibbs scored seven points in the first quarter and six in the second to lead the team with 13 points at the break on 6-of-6 shooting from the field.
  • After Emory scored the first five points of the third quarter to lead by 10, the Tartans used a 12-0 run over a three-minute and 32-second span.
  • The Tartans made two three-pointers during the 12-0 run, one by junior Megan Matsko and one by sophomore Catherine Or.
  • The Eagles answered with a 13-2 run to lead again by nine points before the Tartans closed the quarter with a six straight to trail by three, 53-50, heading into the final frame.
  • There were four lead changes and three ties in the fourth quarter with Emory taking a four-point lead with 1:39 to go on the team's 11th three-pointer of the contest but first of the quarter.
  • The Tartans earned an extra possession after a jump ball with two seconds to play and Matsko hit the mid-range jumper off the inbounds play to knot the score with .4 seconds to go.
  • After an Emory timeout and the ball on its offensive side of the court, a pass over the top gave a free layup to Mariane Auza which she scored for the game-winning points as time expired.

For the Tartans

  • Or led the Tartans with 21 points and 13 rebounds for her second straight double-double.
  • Gibbs finished with 17 points for a new career-high.
  • Matsko closed with 15 points.
  • Junior Anika Prasad hit two three-pointers and recorded eight points off the bench.

For the Eagles

  • Claire Brock led the game with 22 points.
  • Daniella Aronsky scored 18 points off a 5-of-6 performance from long range.

Notes

  • Or recorded her sixth double-double of the season in the third quarter after reaching 10 rebounds before hitting a three-pointer to record 11 points.
  • The Eagles hit a season-best 45.8% from behind the arc and made double-digit treys for the third time this season with 11.
  • The Tartans finished with four made three-pointers and hit 14-of-15 free throw attempts.
