Tartans to Welcome Five for 2016 Season

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team will welcome five newcomers for the 2016 season. The Tartans will return to the court in August after recording the second highest win total in school history with 29 victories in 2015. The Tartans will also return an All-American middle hitter and All-Region libero to go with four additional seniors, five juniors and five sophomores.

Chisom Amaechi had a clear idea of what she wanted to do in 2009 when she graduated with her chemical engineering and engineering and public policy degrees from Carnegie Mellon University. Her time on the volleyball court and in and out of the classroom had prepared her for her life’s journey and for her next step, graduate school.

Junior Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) of the Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team was named the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Defensive Player of the Year. Joining Higgins on the ECAC All-Star squad is junior Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), a first-team honoree, and junior setter Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) on the second team.

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team hosted Marymount University Wednesday, November 11, in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Region Tournament. The Tartans defeated the Saints 3-1 (29-27, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22) to advance to the semifinals on Saturday. The 25th-ranked Tartans improve to 28-7 while the Saints end their season with a mark of 18-11.

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team, with a record of 27-7, has been selected as the number one-seed in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Region Tournament. The Tartans will play Marymount University, the eight-seed, in the first round of the eight-team regional on Wednesday, November 11 at 6:00 p.m. If the Tartans advance, they will host the semifinals and finals on Saturday, November 14.

Three Carnegie Mellon University volleyball players were named to the All-University Athletic Association (UAA) team when the squads were announced November 10. Junior middle blocker Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) was named to the first team, junior setter Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) earned second team honors while junior libero Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) was named honorable mention.

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team finished the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in fifth place after defeating the University of Rochester, 3-0, on Saturday, November 7. The Tartans close the regular season with a 27-7 record.

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team, ranked 20th nationally, opened the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship with a 3-2 setback to the 21st-ranked Maroons of the University of Chicago before blanking Brandeis University 3-0 in the nightcap on Friday, November 6. The championship tournament is being held in Rochester, New York, on the campus of the University of Rochester. The Tartans are b26-7 overall and now have the most victories in a season in head coach Kim Kelly's 11-year tenure.

For the fourth time this season, junior libero Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla.) of the 21st-ranked Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team was named Corvias Eastern Conference Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Region Libero of the Week. Higgins receives the award following the team’s 3-1 win over NAIA foe Point Park University Friday, October 30.

Gibbons helped the 24th-ranked Tartans to a 2-1 week, as the Tartans competed at the Juniata Wid Guisler Invitational Friday and Saturday, October 23-24.

The 24th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team swept through two matches at Juniata College on Saturday, October 24, defeating Geneva College and Bridgewater College by 3-0 scores. The Tartans are now 24-6 on the year.
