50 Points! Allen of #19 Tartans Breaks Two Single-Game School Records in 101-92 Overtime Victory Over Dickinson

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Junior Justin Allen of the 19th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team breaks single-game scoring and three-point records in 101-92 overtime victory against Dickinson College Monday afternoon. Allen finished the game with 50 points and nine made three-point buckets, as the Tartans win in Pittsburgh closed their non-University Athletic Association (UAA) slate with a 9-2 record while Dickinson is now 4-7.

How it Happened

  • Dickinson jumped to a 13-5 lead five minutes into the game, and then took its largest lead of the game half, 33-22, with 5:13 to play in the first half.
  • A three-point field goal off the hands of senior Aidan Murphy cut the Tartans deficit to 35-31 as the clock read 3:46 before the Red Devils took a 44-39 lead into the locker room.
  • With the Tartans trailing 50-47 four minutes into the second half, the home team ignited for a 10-0 run which saw junior Justin Allen convert his seventh triple of the contest and gave the Cardinal and Gray a 57-50 lead at the 13:06 mark.
  • On two occasions in the second half, Carnegie Mellon pushed its lead to nine points with the final time occurring on a pair of foul shots by Allen that made the score 78-69.
  • Over the next five minutes, the Red Devils outscored the Tartans 16-5 and took an 85-83 advantage with 1:05 to play in regulation.
  • Ten seconds later, freshman Alex Hassanein connected on a pair of free throws to knot the score at 85-all and send the contest into overtime.
  • Carnegie Mellon opened the extra frame scoring the first six points and never looked back, as the Tartans converted 8-of-9 from the line in overtime.

Tartan Stats

  • Carnegie Mellon shot 48.5% from the field (32-66) and 50.0% (13-26) from behind the arc. The Tartans shot 88.9% from the line (24-27).
  • Allen finished shooting 17-of-30 from the floor for 50 points while he converted 9-of-13 from behind the arc. The junior also was perfect at the foul line making all seven of his attempts.
  • Graduate student R.J. Holmes ended the contest with 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
  • Holmes along with senior Nolan Casey led the Tartans with five assists apiece.

Red Devil Stats

  • Dickinson ended the game shooting 48.0% (36-75) from the field and 20.0% (5-25) from three.
  • David Petrusev led four Red Devils in double figures with 24 points. He also grabbed a team-high of 10 rebounds.
  • Isaiah Edmond finished with 22 points, Joey Dopirak had 13 and Juan Ruiz totaled 10 points.

Game Notes

  • Allen's 50 points tops the school record of 43 points held by Bill Sofa (1957-58) and teammate R.J. Holmes (2021-22).
  • Allen's nine triples break the previous record held by A.J. Straub of eight at Skidmore on December 9, 2005.
  • Holmes now has 29 career double-doubles, including seven this season.
  • Holmes moved into fifth all-time in career rebounds for a Tartan and has 750.
  • It marked Allen's ninth game this season of scoring 20 or more points and fourth scoring 30 or more. His previous high was 40 points that he scored at Washington & Jefferson a season ago.
  • Since the 1947-48 season, the Tartans are 26-2 when scoring 100 or more points in a contest and have won five straight.
