Tartans Can't Overcome Hot Shooting Eagles

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted 11th-ranked Emory University on Friday, February 7 and fell to the Eagles by a 97-72 score. The Tartans are now 11-8 and 2-6 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Eagles move to 16-3 and 6-2.

How it Happened

  • Emory led 7-2 before the Tartans went on a 7-2 run to tie the score at 9-all on a layup by junior Justin Allen.
  • Thirty seconds later the Tartans took their first lead on a dunk by graduate student R.J. Holmes off a feed from senior Nolan Casey.
  • After the Tartans twice led by four points before the Eagles took a short lived 20-19 lead with a little more than half of the first half to play.
  • The Tartans last lead of the game came at 22-20 with 8:50 showing on the clock after a defensive rebound and layup by junior Buckley DeJardin.
  • The Eagles used a 26-8 run to finish the frame to lead by 16 points at the break.
  • The deficit was too much for the Tartans as they only clawed to within 11 points with 11:31 to go before the Eagles ran the score back to 21 points with 6:17 to go.

  • Allen finished the game with 26 points after making 13-of-26 attempts from the floor.
  • Senior Aidan Murphy tallied 14 points with 12 coming from the free throw line.
  • The team shot 38.8% from the field for the game.

Eagle Stats                                                                

  • Five players scored in double figures with Logan Shanahan leading with 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting.
  • Ben Pierce had 17 points and seven assists while Jair Knight finished with 14, AJ Harris with 13, and Spencer Hall with 10 points off the bench.
  • The Eagles shot 52.8% for the game and 64.5% in the second half. They made 10-of-26 attempts from beyond the arc.
