Holmes' Double-Double Leads Tartans to Season Sweep of Rochester

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted the University of Rochester on Sunday, February 9. The Tartans rallied from a halftime deficit to win 72-69 and sweep the season series. The Tartans are now 12-8 and 3-6 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), as the Yellowjackets are 7-13 and 1-8.
How it Happened
- The Tartans first points of the game came 4:28 in with Rochester leading 9-0.
- Rochester would lead by as many as 11 points in the half before graduate student R.J. Holmes made two free throw to pull the game within eight points wit 5:34 to go in the frame.
- Senior Jonathan Milloway scored eight straight points for the Tartans in the final three minutes in his second game of the season.
- The Tartans trailed by six at the break but a set of four triples in the first five minutes of the second half, along with some free throws, helped the Tartans with a 16-9 run to take their first lead at 44-43.
- Two possessions later, Rochester retook the lead on a three-pointer by Theo Murray.
- The Yellowjackets would hold the lead for three minutes before junior Buckley DeJardin scored a layup off a dish from Holmes to give the Tartans a 50-49 lead.
- It was the Tartans' turn to carry the advantage which they did for seven minutes.
- Corvin Oprea scored the game-tying layup with 3:31 to go but sophomore Isaac Higgs answered with a layup and the home squad held the lead the remainder of play.
Tartan Stats
- Holmes led the team with 14 points and 10 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season.
- Freshman Alex Hassanein scored 13 points off the bench and grabbed a career-best seven rebounds.
- Junior Justin Allen finished with 11 points and DeJardin with 10.
Yellowjacket Stats
- Murray led four players in double digits with 16 points.
- Tomiwa Adetosoye scored 12 and grabbed eight rebounds.
- Oprea tallied 11 points and Nate Sock scored 10 points.
Notes
- Allen is now third all-time in points scored with 1,365 while Holmes is fifth with 1,329.
- The Tartans are 10-0 this season when holding their opponent to 75 points or less.
