(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted the 24th-ranked University of Chicago on Friday, February 14. The Maroons beat the Tartans 82-68, putting the Tartans at 12-9 overall and 3-7 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while the Maroons are 16-5 overall and 7-3 in the conference.
How it Happened
- Junior Justin Allen scored the first points of the game three minutes in with a three-pointer.
- The teams stayed neck and neck for the beginning of the first half with three ties and the last coming at 18-18.
- With 8:28 remaining in the first half, the Tartans broke the 18-18 tie and took the lead after Allen converted two free throws on a flagrant foul and followed it with a driving layup.
- Graduate student R.J. Holmes scored the last points of the first half with a buzzer beater 3-pointer, putting the Tartans in the lead at 37-33 going into the second half.
- The Tartans maintained their lead for the first nine minutes of the second half. The Maroons took the lead with a 3-pointer by Luke Smith that started a 25-6 run to hold the largest lead of the game at 18 points with 3:17 to play.
- Allen scored the final eight points for the Tartans in the last two minutes of the game to lead all players with 34 points.
Tartan Stats
- The Tartans shot 26-56 (46.4%) from the floor and 6-of-23 (26.1%) from behind the arc.
- Allen scored 34 of the Tartans' 68 points, making 14-of-22 from the floor. He also had eight rebounds and a team high of four steals.
- Senior Nolan Casey scored nine points and senior Aidan Murphy scored eight. Both had two assists.
- Freshman Alex Hassanein had a team high of three assists while Holmes finished with eight rebounds.
Maroon Stats
- The Maroons shot 31-of-75 (41.3%) from the floor and 14-of-33 (42.4%) from behind the arc. They also grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and only turned the ball over eight times.
- Thomas Kurowski led the team with a total of 25 points and six assists.
- Eamonn Kenah tallied 19 points and had six assists.
- Smith and Daniel Cochran both scored 10 points.
