Tartans Drop UAA Contest to #19 WashU

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted 19th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Sunday afternoon. The bears defeated the Tartans 78-54.

How it Happened

  • Five minutes into play, WashU held an 11-9 run, but over the next six minutes the Tartans scored nine straight and took an 18-11 edge following a steal from junior Justin Allen who then took it the length of the court for a fast break dunk.
  • WashU pulled within a point at 20-19 with 6:42 to play, but the Tartans answered with a triple by senior Aidan Murphy and a pair of free throws by senior Jonathan Milloway and led 25-19.
  • Over the last 4:31 of the half, the Bears scored the final eight points and took a 27-25 lead into the locker room.
  •  A three-pointer by graduate student R.J. Holmes at the 18:26 mark of the second half knotted the score at 30-all, but the Bears then used an 8-1 run and led 38-31.
  • The visitors' lead grew to 50-39 with 12 minutes to play and once again the Tartans answered and cut the lead to 50-44 on an Allen layup with 9:27 on the clock.
  • That was as close as the Tartans got, as WashU used a 13-2 run over the next four minutes and went on for the 78-54 victory.

  • The Tartans shot 17-52 (32.7%) from the floor and 5-of-21 (32.7%) from behind the arc.
  • Allen led the Tartans with 12 points while Holmes and sophomore Isaac Higgs each finished with 11 points.
  • Senior Nolan Casey had a team-high three assists.

Bear Stats

  • The Bears shot 28-63 (44.4%) from the floor and 10-of-27 (37.0%) from behind the arc.
  • WashU recorded 16 offensive rebounds and turned them into 29 second chance points.
  • Drake Kindsvater led the Bears with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Hayden Doyle along with Connor May each had 11 points. May also tabbed a double-double with 10 rebounds.
