Holmes Records Ninth Double-Double of Season in 77-61 Loss at #2 NYU

(NEW YORK, N.Y) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled to New York City on Friday night to play the second-ranked Violets of NYU. The Tartans dropped a 77-61 University Athletic Association (UAA) contest and are now 12-11 overall and 3-9 in UAA play.

How it Happened

  • At the midway mark of the first half, NYU grabbed a 21-9 advantage after scoring eight straight points.
  • The Tartans answered with an 18-3 run over the next five minutes and took a 27-24 lead, During the run, six different Tartans scored while combined converting 4-of-6 from behind the arc.
  • Late in the first half, the Violets retook the lead at 37-32, but again the Cardinal and Gray responded and scored the final five points of the half and went into the break with the score tied at 37-all.
  • The Tartans final bucket of the frame came in the closing seconds when graduate student R.J. Holmes grabbed an offensive rebound and found junior Justin Allen cutting in the middle of the lane for the layup.
  • NYU started the second half connecting on back-to-back triples and led 43-37.
  • The home team lead grew to 60-42 at the 12-minute mark after back-to-back-to-back triples by NYUs Bryan Moussako.
  • Carnegie Mellon didn't go away and scored seven straight points to make the score 60-49 following a monster dunk by Holmes with 11 minutes to play,
  • Over the next five minutes, NYU used a 9-2 run to push its lead back to 18 points at 69-51.
  • NYU maintained control the rest of the way and went on for the 77-61 victory.

  • The Tartans shot 36.1% from the field (22-61) and 29.6% from behind the arc (8-27).
  • Holmes led the team with 14 points and 12 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season.
  • Allen finished with 11 points while classmate Buckley DeJardin chipped in with 10 points.
  • Allen tied a season-high with five assists.

Violet Stats

  • The Violets shot 41.7% from the field (25-60) and 48.1% from behind the arc (13-27).
  • Hampton Sanders led NYU with a game-high 18 points.
  • Moussako finished with 15 points after he converted 5-of-5 from behind the arc while Jack Stone scored 11 points.

Game Notes

  • Holmes now has 31 career double-doubles.
  • Holmes moved into fourth on the all-time Tartan scoring list and has 1,359 points for his career.
