Tartans Win Four of Five Events to Open Total Performance Invitational

(GAMBIER, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team competed in the first day of the Total Performance Invitational at the Kenyon College on Thursday, November 21. The Tartans ended the first day of the three-day meet in third place out of eight teams with 406.5 points.
Top Performances
- The Tartans led off the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay with sophomore Brayden Morford, junior DJ Lloyd, freshman Matthew Peitler, and junior Arnav Deshpande scoring 36 points with a time of 1:19.59. The time beat the previous meet record from December 2015 set by UPENN of 1:19.77.
- Graduate student Santiago Gomez placed 10th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:37.47 to score 24 points for the team.
- Sophomore Cole Venters had a time of 4:34.52 in the B Final of the 500-yard freestyle to place third in the heat and score 18 points.
- Morford set a second meet record for the Tartans by winning the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:46.37. He beat the previous record held by Johns Hopkins University in 2016 of 1:46.57.
- The Tartans had three swim in the top final of the 50-yard freestyle with Deshpande tying for the victory in a time of 20.17. Lloyd took third with a time of 20.25 and Peitler took fifth with a time of 20.50.
- The 400-yard medley relay team of freshman Matvey Malinovski, senior Christian Lanuza, Morford, and Deshpande closed the meet with a victory in a time of 3:15.33.
- The CMU 'B' team of sophomore Ljubomir Popovic, junior Max Kulbida, freshman William Gao, and Peitler placed third in the 400-yard medley relay by finishing in 3:16.78.
