Morford Wins 100 Backstroke at UAA Championships

(ATLANTA, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team competed in the third day of the University Athletic Association Championships (UAA) on Friday, February 14 at Emory University. Sophomore Brayden Morford won his second UAA title and the Tartans are in fourth place out of eight teams with 848.5 points. 

Top Performances 

  • Morford started the evening with a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in 46.84 before earning his second UAA Championship of the weekend in the 100-yard backstroke in 47.54.
  • Junior Arnav Deshpande earned All-UAA status in the 100-yard backstroke by placing third in a career-best time of 48.07. Freshman Matvey Malinovski touched eighth in the event in a time of 49.36.
  • Three Tartans swam in the championship final of the 100-yard breaststroke with senior Christian Lanuza leading the way in fourth place in 54.98. Sophomore Andy Lu was sixth in 55.34 and graduate student Frank Jones was eighth in 56.16.
  • Sophomore Nico Shuster placed fifth on the 3-meter springboard with 413.60 points while senior Jonathan Lindstrom was seventh with 399.10 points.
  • Sophomore Harrison Quach was 18th in the 400-yard IM, touching in 4:04.07.
  • Sophomore Richard Chung was 18th in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.50 with sophomore Cole Venters touching 21st in 1:41.23.
  • The 200-yard medley relay team of Deshpande, Lanuza, Morford, and junior DJ Lloyd placed third in 1:28.75.
