Tartans Place Fourth at UAA Championships; Morford Named Swimmer of the Year

(ATLANTA, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team finished fourth at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships as the four-day meet came to a close on Saturday, February 15. Sophomore Brayden Morford was honored as the UAA Men's Swimmer of the Year.

Top Performances

  • Sophomore Miles Haraldsson started the evening with a sixth-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 15:48.32 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships.
  • Sophomore Cole Venters was 11th in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 16:02.28.
  • Freshman Matvey Malinovski earned third place in the 200-yard backstroke to receive All-UAA honors with a time of 1:46.87.
  • Junior Arnav Deshpande was the top finisher in the 100-yard freestyle for the Tartans, as he touched 18th in 45.27.
  • Senior Christian Lanuza placed 11th in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:01.96.
  • Junior David Zoota placed 11th in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:51.53.
  • The 400-yard freestyle relay closed the meet with a sixth-place finish as sophomore Ljubomir Popovic, freshman Todd Dong, Deshpande, and graduate student Frank Jones finished in 3:01.33.

Notes

  • Morford is the first swimmer of the year under head coach Matt Kinney.
  • Morford is the first swimmer of the year since David Krzeminski in 2007 and is the 11th for the program.
  • Morford is the first double winner since 2022 when Justin Britton won both backstroke events.

The swimmers will compete in the Kenyon Fast Chance meet on Saturday, February 22 while the divers have a week off before competing in the NCAA Region 4 Diving Championships on Friday, February 28 and Saturday, March 1.
