Tartans Win Two Events at First Day of NCAA Championships

(GREENSBORO, N.C.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team opened the 2025 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships with two national champion swims at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Wednesday, March 19.

Sophomore Brayden Morford started the Tartans' evening with a school-record finish in the 200-yard IM, winning the event in a time of 1:45.50 to pass his own record and take the crown by 76 hundredths of a second. Morford is the first national champion since 2007 for the Tartans when David Krzeminski won the 200-yard butterfly. He is also the second 200-yard IM national champion for the Tartans, joining Brian McCarthy with the honor from 2002.

The 400-yard medley relay closed the night for the Tartans with an incredible swim from junior Arnav Deshpande, senior Christian Lanuza, Morford, and freshman Matthew Peitler who won the event by more than a second in a time of 3:10.84, topping the school record set at last year's NCAA Championship of 3:13.22. The national champion finish by the relay is the first for the program.

Deshpande and Peitler swam in the preliminaries of the 50-yard freestyle finishing 30th and 32nd in 20.44 and 20.48, respectively.

The Tartans are currently second with 60 points while Denison University is in the lead with 115 points.

The meet continues on Thursday with Morford swimming the 100-yard butterfly, Peitler the 200-yard freestyle, and a relay team in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
