#22 Tartans Defeat NYU at UAA Championship

(ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.) - The 22nd-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team played NYU in the consolation semifinals of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Friday in Altamonte Springs, Florida. The Tartans defeated the Violets 6-0 and are now 6-11 on the season as the Violets move to 1-10.

Carnegie Mellon swept through double play with the tandem of senior Sam Gibson (Chico, Calif. / Pleasant Valley) and junior Matthew Poh (Manhattan Beach, Calif. / Mira Costa) securing the first point with an 8-1 win at two doubles. Junior Jonathan Nottingham (Philadelphia, Pa. / Masterman High School) and sophomore Nicholas Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y. / Friends Academy) won 8-5 at the top spot to extend the Tartans lead to 2-0. Sophomore Arjan Bedi (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) and freshman William Wang (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis) closed doubles with an 8-2 win at third doubles.

Freshman Benny Zhou (Allen, Texas / iUniversity Prep) started the scoring in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the four spot. Second and six singles finished simultaneously with Wernink winning 6-2, 6-3 and sophomore Derek Wong (La Jolla, Calif. / Francis Parker) winning 6-3, 6-1, respectively.

The Tartans will now face 14th-ranked Brandeis University at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the fifth-place match.
