#27 Tartans Defeat Brandeis at UAA Championship

(ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.) - The 27th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team played Brandeis University in the consolation semifinals of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Friday in Altamonte Springs, Florida. The Tartans defeated the Judges 5-2 and are now 7-10 on the season as the Judges move to 1-15.

How it Happened:

  • The Tartans led 2-1 following doubles play.
  • Carnegie Mellon earned its first point by way of a default victory and then senior Derek Wong and sophomore Akshay Joshi won 8-2 at second doubles for the Tartans second point.
  • The Cardinal took a 3-1 lead after receiving a point in singles play by default.
  • Senior Nicholas Wernink gave the Tartans a 4-1 advantage with a 6-2, 6-1 win at four singles.
  • After Brandeis collected a point at five singles, freshman Daniel Kong sealed the win with a 6-3, 6-4 win at second singles.

  • The Tartans will now face NYU at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the fifth-place match.
