Tartans Compete at West Virginia University Last Chance

(MORGANTOWN, W.Va.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed at the West Virginia University Last Chance on Saturday.

Senior Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) won the triple and long jumps with marks of 14.59 and 7.09 meters with senior Varun Narayan (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) taking second in the long jump with a mark of 6.99 meters. Freshman Luke Blackwell (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks East) placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.20 meters.

The high jump saw freshman Sebastian Sanso (Santa Cruz, Calif. / Santa Cruz) clear the bar at 1.75 meters to place second. Junior Bailey O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) tossed the shot put 13.21 meters to place fourth while sophomore Thomas Rich (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) also turned in a fourth-place finish in the javelin with a mark of 34.13 meters.

On the track, four Tartans placed within the top six in the 1,500-meter run. Freshman Colin McLaughlin (Stamford, Conn. / Westhill) won the event after crossing in 3:52.50. Freshman Eamon Brady (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) took fourth in 4:00.76 while freshmen Aleksei Seletskiy (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) and sophomore Jacob Hsu (Arcadia, Calif. / Arcadia) crossed in fifth and sixth with times of 4:03.42 and 4:07.07, respectively.

Graduate student Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) took second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.71. Junior Alex Halkias (Berlin, Conn. / Berlin) crossed in 21.97 and took second in the 200-meter dash. In the 800-meter run, sophomore Alex Ivanov (Newton, Mass. / Newton) took sixth with a time of 1:55.37.

Junior Elijah Sech (San Clemente, Calif. / San Clemente) and sophomore David Durdaller (Hewlett, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett) closed the meet running in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Sech took third in 9:20.05 while Durdaller placed fourth crossing in 9:22.61.

The 4x400-meter relay team of senior Michael Cai (Dumont, N.J. / Bergen County Academies), Johnson, sophomore Pranav Rajbhandari (Marietta, Ga. / Walton) and sophomore Andrew McGovern (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) won the race with a time of 3:23.51.

Up next for the Tartans will be the Marty Goldberg Gator Invite hosted by Allegheny College on Thursday, May 12.
