Tartans Set Two UAA Records on First Day of UAA Indoor Championships

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) — The Carnegie Mellon men's track and field team began competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships at The Armory in New York, New York, on Saturday, February 24. After the five scored events, the Tartan lead the field by 25.5 points with a total of 65 points.

Top Performances on the Track

  • Junior Matthew Coyle placed third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:30.81 followed by senior David Durdaller in fourth with a time of 14:32.13. Graduate student Matthew Porter placed sixth with a time of 14:35.45.
  • The Tartans won the UAA crown in the distance medley relay with a UAA record. Freshman Matthew Short, sophomore Jeremy Ocloo, senior Andrew McGovern, and junior Colin McLaughlin finished in a time of 9:56.72 to beat the time of 9:57.81 set by Washington University in St. Louis last year.

Finals Qualifiers

  • McGovern qualified for the 800-meter dash with a school record and UAA record of 1:50.40.
  • Graduate student Leland Davies, 400-meter dash (career-best time of 50.21)
  • Senior Thomas Rich, 60-meter hurdles (school record time of 8.31)
  • Freshman Matthew Yu, 60-meter dash (7.08) and 200-meter dash (career-best time of 22.28)
  • Sophomore Bennett Wong, 60-meter dash (7.14) and 200-meter dash (career-best time of 22.38)

Top Performances in the Field

  • Rich placed second in the high jump with a mark of 1.98 meters, followed by junior Sebastian Sanso with a mark of 1.93 meters.
  • Junior Cody Breidenbach placed second in the weight throw with a mark of 16.74 meters. Graduate student Bailey O'Malley placed fourth with a mark of 16.26 meters, and sophomore Sam Alligood placed fifth with a career-best mark of 15.51 meters.
  • Sophomore Morgan Johnson placed second in the long jump with a career-best mark of 6.93 meters. Rich placed seventh with a mark of 6.65 meters.
