Tartans Reign as UAA Outdoor Champions Once Again

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team are back-to-back University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track and Field Champions after finishing the second day of the championship meet with 218 points on Sunday, April 28. Emory University placed second with 180.50 points.

Top Performances on the Track

  • Freshman Matthew Yu, sophomore Jeremy Ocloo, senior Austin Weltz, and sophomore Bennet Wong finished third in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 42.51 to lead off the day.
  • Junior Colin McLaughlin finished fifth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3.52.83 and freshman Matthew Short finished seventh with a time of 3:54.51.
  • Ocloo finished second in the 400-meter run with a career-best time of 48.51.
  • Wong finished eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11:43.
  • Graduate student Leland Davies finished fifth with a time of 1:52.79 in the 800-meter run.
  • Senior Andrew McGovern won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.02, followed by senior Thomas Rich in third place with a career-best time of 55.59 and freshman Philip Ma took fourth with a career-best time of 55.72, a full two seconds better than his previous best.
  • Weltz finished second in the 200-meter run with a time of 22.26 while Wong was eighth in 23.12.
  • Senior Jacob Hsu won the 5,000-meter run in a time of 14:51.77. Graduate student Matthew Porter finished fourth in the same race in a time of 15:11.21.
  • Ocloo, Davies, Rich, and McGovern finished third in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:19.27 to close the afternoon.

Inside the Field

  • Junior Sebastian Sanso won the triple jump with a career-best mark of 14.07 meters.
  • Freshman Derek Armfield took first place in the men's javelin throw with a career-best mark of 58.70 meters.
  • Freshman Atai Tahasan finished fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.74 meters.
  • Sophomore Sam Alligood finished second in the discus throw with a career-best mark of 46.70 meters and junior Nathaniel Deyak took fifth in the discus throw with a career-best mark of 41.04 meters.
  • Rich placed seventh in the high jump, clearing 1.91 meters.
  • Graduate student Jonathan David and Rich finished seventh and eighth in the javelin throw with marks of 48.39 meters and 47.71 meters, respectively.
