Tartans Start Competition at NCAA Outdoor Championships

(MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) - Members of the Carnegie Mellon University men's outdoor track and field team competed at the first day of the 2024 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday. The championships are being held at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

NCAA Performances:

  • Following the first day of the decathlon, in which five events took place, senior Thomas Rich is in eighth place with 3,597 points.
  • Rich placed fourth in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 12.74 meters, fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.69 meters and fifth in the high jump clearing the bar at 1.85 meters to highlight Thursday's decathlon events.
  • The 10,000-meter run featured two Tartans with graduate student Matthew Porter and junior Matthew Coyle placing 15th and 16th with times of 31:33.76 and 31:37.55, respectively.
  • Senior Andrew McGovern ran in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles and posted a time of 53.26 to place 12th.
  • Freshman Derek Armfield competed in the javelin and placed 20th with a throw of 54.02 meters.
  • Sophomore Christian Duckworth participated in the pole vault and was unable to mark.

  • The championships continue Friday, May 24 with Rich starting off in the 110-meter hurdles of the decathlon at 12:00 p.m.
