Coyle Breaks 5k School Record in Boston, Tartans Compete at D3 Elite Meet at Nazareth

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed at two different meets over the weekend. A few athletes competed at the David Hemery Valentine Invite at Boston University while the team competed at the D3 Elite Meet at Nazareth University.

Top Performances in Boston

  • Senior Matthew Coyle broke the school record in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:08.97. The old record was held by Michael Obroin which he set at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships.
  • Sophomore Ryan Podnar also ran the 5000, finishing in a personal-best time of 14:23.63.
  • Senior Eamon Brady earned a personal-best in the mile with a time of 4:13.08 while senior Matthew Denton also earned personal-best in the mile with a time of 4:15.36.
  • Senior Aleksei Seletskiy ran the mile in 4:20.97.
  • Sophomore Matthew Short ran the 3000-meter run in 8:34.76.

Top Performances at Nazareth

  • Freshman Oliver Moss and senior Seth Williams placed first and second in the 5000-meter run, with times of 14:52.76 and 14:53.78, respectively. It was a personal-best for Williams.
  • Junior Morgan Johnson earned second place in long jump with a mark of 6.67 meters. Freshman Luke Freimanis finished fourth with a mark of 6.73 meters.
  • Junior Bennett Wong, senior Sean Dutton, freshman Veyd Patil, and Freimanis finished fifth in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:27.60.
  • Senior Sebastian Sanso finished second in triple jump with a mark of 13.86.  Sophomore Atai Tahsan placed fifth with a mark of 13.46.
  • Sanso also took sixth in the high jump with a mark of 1.87.
  • In pole vault, junior Casey Potrebic earned third place with a mark of 4.33 meters. Also, with marks of 4.33 meters, sophomore Solomon Glavach got fourth and freshman Lucas Knappenberger got seventh.
  • Sophomore Johnathan Crawshaw earned a mark of 14.44 in shot put, placing fifth.
  • Junior Thomas Damiani and freshman Nicolo Fasanelli finished third and fourth in the 3000-meter run with times of 8:43.53 and 8:46.40. It was a personal-best for Damian.
  • Freshman Devin Chang finished the 60-meter dash in 7.08, finishing fourth.
  • Patil placed seventh in the 800-meter, finishing in a time of 1:58.22.

On Friday, February 21, the Tartans will travel to Penn State University for the Penn State Last Chance Meet and to the Mount Union Tune Up.
