Coyle Wins 5k UAA Title, Tartans in Third After Opening Day of UAA Indoor Championships

(CHICAGO, Ill.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships on Saturday. The two-day championship meet is being hosted by the University of Chicago. The Tartans have 39 points and are currently third heading into the final day.
Top Performances on the Track:
- Senior Matthew Coyle won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:52.84. Sophomore Ryan Podnar placed fifth with a time of 15:07.95 while freshman Oliver Moss finished in eighth crossing in 15:18.86.
- The Tartans DMR team of graduate student Matthew Denton, junior Bennett Wong, senior Sean Dutton and sophomore Matthew Short crossed in third with a time of 10:11.76.
- Freshman Luke Freimanis crossed first in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.28 seconds while classmate Kurt Schimmel placed third in 8.46 seconds as they both advanced to the finals.
- Freshman Devin Chang recorded a time of 6.96 seconds in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash and will run in the finals. His time was .01 seconds off the school record.
- Wong ran the 200-meter dash in 22.67 and advanced to the finals.
Top Performances in the Field:
- Senior Sebastian Sanso placed second in the long jump with a career-best jump of 6.87 meters. Junior Morgan Johnson placed sixth with a jump of 6.66 meters.
- Sanso started the day clearing the bar at 1.94 meters to place fourth in the high jump.
- Senior Nathaniel Deyak recorded a toss of 14.47 meters in the weight throw to place fifth.
