Tartans Drop a Pair to End Series with #20 Brandeis

(HARMONY, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team dropped the last two games of the four-game series with 20th-ranked Brandeis University on Sunday, April 21 by scores of 5-1 and 6-2 at Seneca Valley High School in Harmony, Pennsylvania. The Tartans are now 10-22 for the season and 3-13 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Judges move to 25-2-1 and 10-2.

Game 1: #20 Brandeis 5, CMU 1

When resuming yesterday's game with a runner on third base and two outs for the Tartans, Brandeis pitcher Scottie Todd was able to strikeout freshman Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King) to end the first inning. The Judges got on the board in the top of the second inning when Marissa DeLaurentis hit a sacrifice fly to left field with the bases loaded. DeLaurentis then recorded another RBI in the fourth inning with a single to center field. Two other Judges scored in the sixth inning with an additional runner crossing the plate in the seventh inning.

Freshman Summer Faille (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake) singled in a run in the seventh inning for the Tartans who were unable to complete the seventh-inning rally.

Game 2:

Brandeis scored first with a sacrifice fly in the third inning before the Tartans took a 2-1 lead when pinch hitter Jess Eshenbaugh (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport Area) drilled a two-run double to right field off the fence to plate freshman Io Jette-Kouri (Pasadena, Calif. / Westridge) and Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach).

The lead was short lived for the Tartans as the Judges scored three times in the top of the fifth for a 4-2 advantage. The Judges then tacked on another two runs in the seventh for a three-run cushion heading into the final at bat for the home Cardinal and Gray.

The Tartans return to action on Tuesday, April 23 when they host Washington and Jefferson College for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
