Four-Run Seventh Inning Leads Tartans to Split with NYU
(BRONX, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team played a doubleheader against New York University on Saturday, April 27 at Fordham University as part of the season-closing University Athletic Association (UAA) series for both teams. The Violets took game one by a 5-2 score before the Tartans scored four runs in the seventh inning of game two to win 7-5. The Tartans are now 12-24 overall and 4-14 in the UAA while the Violets are 19-12 and 7-8.
Game 1: NYU 5, Carnegie Mellon 2
The Violets scored in the first inning off freshman Gwen Delacruz (Laguna Nigel, Calif. / Aliso Niguel) when Ashley Mains tripled to right field with two outs and a runner on second base. A leadoff homer by Diana King in the third inning doubled the lead for the Violets who tacked on another run in the inning when Caroline Saccacio grounded out to second scoring Claire Stefanelli from third.
The Tartans cut into the deficit in the fourth inning when freshman Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes) scored on an infield error off the bat of freshman Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King). Hu reached base with one out by knocking a single through the first and second base gap. She then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Another run came across the plate for the Tartans in the fifth inning on an RBI single by freshman Summer Faille (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake). Freshman Meghan Holquist (Ellicott City, Md. / Mount Hebron) scored from second after reaching base on an error.
The Violets added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and Scarlett Murphy was able to retire the side to earn the save for Maggie Swan who won her fifth game of the season.
Game 2: Carnegie Mellon 7, NYU 5
Four runs in the top of the seventh inning led the Tartans to a 7-5 win, as freshman Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) went the distance for her seventh win of the season behind 12 strikeouts.
The Tartans scored twice in the first inning when freshman Io Jette-Kouri (Pasadena, Calif. / Westridge) plated freshman Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) by reaching on an error with less than two outs. Jette-Kouri later stole home for the second run of the frame.
The Violets tied the game with a run in the first and a run in the second. Both teams scored in their respective half of the fifth inning with the Violets plating two to the Tartans one. The Tartans scored when freshman Audra Scheinman (Falls Church, Va. / George C. Marshall) singled down the right field line to score freshman Audrey Pederson (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) who started the inning with a triple.
Three hits by the Tartans in the seventh inning scored four for the Cardinal and Gray who took at 7-4 lead. Faille doubled in a run, Hu singled in two and McGee's single to center field scored Jette-Kouri for the final tally.
McGee struck out the first two batters of the seventh inning before the third batter reached safely and advanced to second on a fielding error. A deep infield single scored a run before McGee got Ashley Mains to ground out to third base for the final out.
The Tartans and Violets return to the diamond on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. for a doubleheader.
