(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – After earning the program's first regional ranking in school history this year, three Carnegie Mellon University softball players received National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region Awards for the Central Region. Sophomore Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King) was honored on the second team as a designated player while juniors Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes) and Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) were honored on the third team at shortstop and pitcher, respectively.

Johnson, a utility player for the Tartans who saw some time at catcher and as the designated player, hit .435 with 20 hits in 46 at bats. The sophomore had a slugging percentage of .652 with one home run, two triples, and three doubles, and knocked in 14 runs while scoring 14 herself.

Hu, who hit .472 with 34 hits in 72 at bats and ended the season on a 10-game hitting streak, led the offense. The starting shortstop, Hu also led the team with 21 RBIs and was second on the team with 17 runs scored

McGee made 10 appearances in the pitching circle, with seven complete games in eight starts. Four of her complete games were shutouts and her 6-1 record brings her career win total to 19. She led the team in strikeouts for the third consecutive year, registering 93 for the season with 11.10 strikeouts per seven innings pitched. Five times she struck out 10 or more batters with a career-best 15 against Mount Aloysius. She finished with a 1.43 ERA in 58.2 innings pitched and now has a career ERA of 2.46 with 283 career strikeouts.

The Tartans finished the 2021 season with a 15-6-1 record after COVID-19 altered their season plans of a typical 40-game schedule. The third-year program earned its first regional ranking, entering the rankings on April 30 at seventh and finished the regular season ranked eighth. The team compiled a program-best .353 hitting percentage, ranking 43rd in the nation, and team ERA of 3.32.
