Tartans Split with Southwestern to Close Texas Trip

(GEORGETOWN, Texas) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team defeated Southwestern University 12-4 in game one and fell 8-6 in game two to move to 2-8 for the season while the Pirates are 9-8.

Game 1

  • The Tartans recorded a season-best 14 hits and scored a season-high 12 runs to win in five innings.
  • Five players recorded at least two hits with junior Koko Sagae collecting three hits.
  • Senior Faith Lawrence had three runs batted in while graduate student Kiera Boucher and freshman Reagan Diamond each hit in two runs.
  • The Tartans trailed 1-0 after the first inning but scored once in the second and five in the third to take a 6-1 lead.
  • Boucher, Sagae, and sophomore Maddy Beall had RBI singles in the third while Diamond had a sacrifice fly.
  • Lawrence hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning.
  • Junior Kira Monji, Boucher, and senior Abbey Reese collected RBIs in the fifth inning.
  • Freshman Gianna Adams earned the win after striking out the last batter in the fifth inning. She held the Pirates to five hits.

Game 2

  • Lawrence, Reese, and Beall had two hits each while senior Allie Rome had three hits.
  • The Tartans trailed 4-0 after two innings but leveled the scored with four runs in the top of the fourth.
  • Lawrence started the fourth with a triple and scored on a single by Reese. Rome plated Reese with a single to center field and Monji tripled with two outs to knock in two runs.
  • Trailing 8-4 entering the seventh inning, the Tartans scored twice but left a runner on base to end the game.
  • Rome singled in both runs in the seventh with two outs.

The Tartans will travel to Transylvania University for the Pioneer Classic where they'll open the four-game, two-day weekend against John Carroll University on Saturday, March 15 at 12:15 p.m.
