Tartans Sweep First Home Series

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team swept its first doubleheader of the season with a pair of wins against The University of Mount Union on Sunday, March 23 at Shady Side Academy. The Tartans won game one 5-3 and game two 10-9 and are now 5-9 overall while the Raiders move to 10-6 for the season.

Game 1

  • The Raiders put one run on the board in the top of the first and the top of the second.
  • The Tartans scored three runs in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Maddy Beall walked with the bases loaded to plate freshman Reagan Diamond who singled with one out. Senior Libby Eichberger then singled to center field to score senior Allie Rome and senior Abbey Reese.
  • The Tartans scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Lawrence grounded out to second to score graduate student Kiera Boucher and Diamond doubled to right center to score junior Koko Sagae with two outs.
  • The Raiders added a run in the top of the sixth but freshman Gianna Adams retired the side in the seventh to earn the win.
  • Adams collected three strikeouts in the game while Diamond was 3-for-3 at the plate.

Game 2

  • Mount Union took a 3-0 lead in the second inning before sophomore Maddy Beall tied the game with one swing in the bottom of the inning.
  • Diamond continued her day at the plate with a single to right field that scored Lawrence who doubled and junior Kira Monji who walked to give the Tartans a 5-3 lead.
  • The Tartans scored five times in the bottom of the fourth, with the first being after Beall and Eichberger pulled off a double steal with Beall scoring. Eichberger then advanced to third on a bunt single by Boucher and then scored on an error when Boucher stole second.
  • The third run of the inning came off the bat of Monji who recorded a single.
  • After an out, Lawrence hit a two-run home run to center field.
  • The Raiders rallied for three runs in the fifth and sixth inning to trail by one going into the seventh. Freshman Gabriella Triano retired the side, including striking out the final two batters to preserve the victory.
  • Diamond recorded another 3-for-3 game at the plate.
