Tartans Drop Doubleheader Against #21 Emory

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team played a doubleheader against 21st-ranked Emory University on Saturday, March 29. The Tartans dropped the first game 5-1 and lost the second game 5-3 to go to 7-11 for the season while the Eagles jump to 19-2 overall and 5-0 in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

Game 1

  • Game one started on Friday but was suspended in the bottom of the first inning due to rain with the score tied 1-1.
  • When play resumed Saturday afternoon, the Mackenzie Duford was able to strand two Tartan runners by recording the last two outs of the inning via a strikeout and a fly out.
  • Graduate student Kiera Boucher led off the bottom of the third inning with a bunt single and advanced to third on a throwing error. A fly ball to center field by junior Koko Sagae was caught and thrown home by Ashley Chu who doubled up Boucher attempting to tag from third.
  • The Tartans loaded the bases in the fourth inning but Duford was able to strike out two batters and ended the inning with another fly ball to left field to keep the game tied at 1-1.
  • The Eagles put the go ahead run across the plate with Shivani Nangia homered to center field with two outs, plating Addison Kwong who led off the inning with a single. A third run was scored in the inning, giving the Eagles a 4-1 advantage.
  • Another RBI single with two outs ended the scoring in the seventh inning for the Eagles. 

Game 2

  • Emory took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ellie Zerr homered to right center.
  • The Eagles added two runs in the top of the fourth and a fourth run in the top of the fifth inning.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Boucher grounded into a fielder's choice to shortstop, plating sophomore Jasmine Chao who was pinch running for senior Allie Rome who led off the inning with a single to left field.
  • The Tartans left two runners on base in the fifth and sixth innings and the Eagles added a run in the top of the seventh to take a 5-1 lead.
  • With one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Tartans loaded the bases with a single by junior Kira Monji, a bunt single by Boucher, and a single up the middle by freshman Reagan Diamond.
  • Senior Faith Lawrence laced a pitch to center field that hit off the glove of Chu who leaped in the air attempting the catch. The long single plated both Monji and Boucher with Diamond having to stop at second.
  • Lexi Bach, the starting pitcher for the Eagles, returned to the game and got Sagae to fly out to left field and sophomore Maddy Beall to foul out to third to end the game.
