Tartans Split Play Against UChicago 

(NEW CASTLE, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team played a doubleheader against the University of Chicago on Friday, April 4. The Tartans started off strong winning the first game 2-1, but were defeated by the Maroons in the second game 5-1. This puts the Tartans at 8-13 overall and 1-4 in the conference, while the Maroons are at 12-11 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Game 1

  • The Tartans took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when a single from senior Faith Lawrence allowed junior Kira Monji to run home from second base.
  • In the bottom of the 5th, a single from sophomore Maddy Beall allowed her to advance to second, Lawrence to move to third and freshman Reagan Diamond to score from third.
  • The Maroons scored their only run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh.
  • The Tartans had a total of 10 hits compared while the Maroons had five. Monji, Diamond, Lawrence, and Beall each had two hits, while senior Abbey Reese and sophomore Maya Bala each had one.
  • Freshman Gianna Adams pitched all seven innings for the Tartans, recording four strikeouts, for her third win of the season.

Game 2

  • The Maroons took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after collecting two hits.
  • The Maroons upped their lead in the top of the second, scoring on an error by the catcher.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Monji singled to second base, allowing senior Libby Eichberger to advance to third after she led off with a single and stole second. The pair would then pull off a double steal to score the team's first run.
  • The Tartans would leave runners on base in the fifth and sixth innings, including two in the sixth when a pitching change by the Maroons kept the Tartans for scoring.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Maroons scored two more runs, helping to secure the 5-1 win.
  • The Tartans had a total of six hits. Monji had two hits, while senior Allie Rome, junior Koko Sagae, Reese, and Eichberger each had one.
