(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team completed their three-game series against the University of Chicago on Sunday, April 6. After splitting play on Friday, the Tartans won Sunday's game 6-3. This puts them at 9-13 overall for the season and 2-4 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while the Maroons are at 12-12 overall and 1-5 in the UAA.
How it Happened
- The Tartans took a four-run lead in the bottom of the second with senior Faith Lawrence leading off with a home run to left center.
- After two fielding errors by the Maroons, graduate student Kiera Boucher singled up the middle to score sophomore Maddy Beall and senior Abbey Reese.
- With two outs, Boucher stole home as junior Kira Monji got in a rundown between first and second base.
- Freshman Gianna Adams retired the next three batters for UChicago with two strikeouts and a ground ball out to first base to keep the visiting team scoreless.
- In the bottom of the third, Lawrence hit her second home run of the game, bringing freshman Reagan Diamond home from first after the first year singled to center field for her team-leading 24th hit of the season.
- The Maroons broke up the shutout with three runs in the top of the fourth before Reese made two plays from shortstop for ground ball outs to end the inning.
- Junior Haley Pucci entered the game to pitch in the fifth inning with a runner on first base. The first batter she faced grounded into a double play when Reese fielded the ball up the middle, stepped on second and threw to first to complete the play. After a single by the next batter, senior Allie Rome made a scooping glove play and shuffled the ball to first for the final out of the inning.
- Pucci closed out the game for the save with an additional three strikeouts, a fly out to center field, a bunt out fielded by junior Koko Sagae at third, and a ground out to Reese at shortstop.
- Adams earned the victory after scattering seven hits through 4.0 innings and Pucci the save with a strong three innings of work.
