Tartans Sweep Brandeis to Open Series

(WALTHAM, Mass.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team swept Brandeis University in a doubleheader on Friday, April 11 to open the three-game series at Brandeis. The Tartans are now 11-13 overall and 4-4 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) after winning 1-0 and 6-1 while the Judges are 6-19-1 and 2-6.

Game 1

  • A pitcher's duel between CMU freshman Gianna Adams and Brandeis junior Ragini Kannan fell in favor of CMU with Adams allowing two hits and striking out seven while Kannan allowed four hits and struck out eight batters.
  • The Tartans scored the winning run in the seventh inning after senior Libby Eichberger singled to center field to plate graduate student Kiera Boucher with one out.
  • Boucher led off the inning with a hit by pitch, stole second, and advanced to third on an infield groundout by sophomore Jasmine Chao.
  • Adams then retired the side in the seventh inning to complete the shutout, the first of her career.
  • Adams recorded her third straight victory and is now 9-5 on the season.
  • Eichberger also singled in the fifth inning while senior Abbey Reese singled in the second and junior Koko Sagae singled in the third.

Game 2

  • Reese singled in two runs in the first inning to start the scoring.
  • Sagae singled to right field in the fourth inning to score Reese and Eichberger laid down a bunt single in the fourth to score Sagae for a 4-0 advantage.
  • The Tartans ran the score to 6-0 in the seventh inning with another RBI by Reese and an infield RBI single by Boucher.
  • Junior Haley Pucci went the distance for the win, striking out eight batters and allowing four hits. Pucci now has three wins for the season and tied a career-best for strikeouts in a game.
