Tartans Win First Game of Three-Game Series at NYU

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team competed in the first game of a three-game series against New York University on Friday, April 18. The Tartans defeated the Violets, 3-1, putting them at 13-15 overall and 5-5 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while the Violets are at 9-21 overall and 1-9 in the UAA.
How it Happened
- Taking an early lead, the Tartans scored two runs in the top of the first inning.
- Junior Kira Monji was the first to run home after freshman Reagan Diamond doubled to left center. After advancing to third on a ground out from senior Faith Lawrence, Diamond scored on a passed ball.
- After the Tartans left two runners on base in the second and third innings, junior Koko Sagae homered to left field in the fourth to give the Cardinal and Gray a 3-0 lead.
- The Violets started the bottom of the seventh with two singles and moved the runners up on a sacrifice bunt. They scored on a fielding error but freshman Gianna Adams was able to strikeout the next two batters to secure the victory.
- The Tartans had a total of seven hits and the Violets had a total of four.
- Lawrence had two hits, and Monji, Diamond, Sagae, graduate student Kiera Boucher, and senior Libby Eichberger each had one.
- Adams pitched all seven innings for the Tartans, facing a total of 25 batters. She allowed four hits and twice struck out the side before finishing with a career-tying 12 strikeouts in her seventh win of the year.
