Shutout by Adams Leads Tartans in Split at NYU

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team topped New York University by an 11-0 score in five innings before dropping a 12-11 game to the Violets to close the three-game University Athletic Association (UAA) series on Saturday, April 19 at Fordham University. The Tartans are now 14-16 overall and 6-6 in the UAA while the Violets are 10-22 and 2-10.

Game 1

  • Freshman Gianna Adams struck out eight batters and scattered four hits in her second shutout of the season to win her second game against the Violets and her eighth of the season.
  • Senior Libby Eichberger and freshman Reagan Diamond each hit a double with sophomore Maddy Beall leading the team with three RBIs.
  • The Tartans started off strong in the top of the first with three runs. Senior Allie Rome scored the first run on an error by the shortstop. Later, freshman Gabbie Boone scored on a double steal and senior Abbey Reese scored after a single by Beall.
  • In the top of the second, the Tartans scored four more runs, all of which were unearned. First, Rome scored on Diamond's double. After pinch running for Diamond, junior Haley Pucci scored on an error. Later, senior Faith Lawrence scored on a single by Reese. Reese ran home after a single by Beall.
  • The Tartans scored four additional runs in the top of the fourth. Lawrence scored again on a single from Beall, Reese ran home on a single from junior Koko Sagae, and Beall and graduate student Kiera Boucher scored on a double by Eichberger.

Game 2

  • After the score was tied 1-1 by the Tartans in the top of the second, the Violets scored hree runs in the second, two in the third, and four more in the fourth to take a 10-1 lead.
  • The Tartans strung six hits together in the top of the fifth inning to score eight runs with Diamond hitting a grand slam to plate the first four runs with no outs.
  • Carnegie Mellon scored two more runs in the top of the sixth to take an 11-10 lead when sophomore Maya Bala reached on an error that scored runners from second and third.
  • NYU tied the game in the bottom of the sixth and after the Tartans stranded two runners in the top of the seventh, scored the winning run on a single with two outs.
  • Diamond and Beall each had three hits for the game while the team's 14 hits was the most in UAA play this season and tied a season-high.
