Tartans Drop Series Opener to #11 WashU

(NEW CASTLE, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team played against 11th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Friday, April. 25 in New Castle, Pennsylvania. After a strong fifth inning by the Bears, the Tartans lost the game 5-1, making them 14-17 for the season and 6-7 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while WashU rises to 27-5 and 12-1.

Inside the Box Score

  • After a quiet two innings with only a pair of infield hits by the Bears, the visitor's pushed an unearned run across the plate in the top of the third off the bat of Natalia Pilpil.
  • The Tartans answered in their half of the inning when junior Kira Monji got on base via a hit by pitch with one out. She then stole second and advanced to third on a single to center field by graduate student Kiera Boucher. Monji scored after Boucher got in a rundown during the first and third situation, with Boucher eventually moving to second after a throwing error.
  • Both pitchers retired the side in order in the fourth inning.
  • The Bears then scored four runs on four hits and two throwing errors by the Tartans in the top of the fifth.
  • With one out in the fifth, Monji singled to left field to record her 100th career hit, but she was stranded as Maria Brooks got the next two batters out.
  • The Tartans loaded the bases in the sixth inning with senior Emma Martin hitting a single through the right side with two outs, but a groundout was recorded by the Bears to end the inning.
  • Brooks retired the final three outs in the seventh inning to close the game for the Bears.
  • Freshman Gianna Adams took the loss after surrendering nine hits.
