Tartans Close Season at #14 Case Western Reserve

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team continued its final series of the year with a doubleheader against 14th-ranked Case Western Reserve University on Friday, May 9. The Tartans lost the first game 3-2 in eight innings and the second by an 8-2 score to end the year with a 15-21 record.

Inside the Box Score for Game 1

  • The first five innings of the game were incredibly quiet, with only four hits between the two teams.
  • CWRU scored their first two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth. The first off an RBI single to left center field and the second off an RBI single through the right side.
  • The top of the seventh saw a huge offensive play for the Tartans when Allie Rome reached on a fielder's choice to second, pushing junior Koko Sagae to third and Haley Pucci to score.
  • Sagae then stole home while Rome stole second to tie the game at 2-2 with one out.
  • The Spartans scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth after a bases loaded single with two outs.

Inside the Box Score for Game 2

  • Case Western Reserve scored four runs in the bottom of the first after stringing together three doubles and a sacrifice fly.
  • The top of the second inning saw the Tartans score one run when senior Libby Eichberger hit a single to center field that pushed freshman Reagan Diamond across the plate from second base.
  • CWRU answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning to lead 5-1.
  • Both teams scored runs in the fourth inning with the Tartans' run coming off the bat of senior Emma Martin who singled to right field with Diamond scoring again.
  • The Spartans added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and then relief pitcher Devanghi Misra retired three Tartans in the seventh to close the game.
