Kuramoto Wins 3-Meter Event at NCAA Diving Regional

(ITHACA, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's diving team had three competitors at the 2023 NCAA Division III Region 4 Diving Championships hosted by Ithaca College on Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25. Junior Kelli Kuramoto earned automatic qualification to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships by winning the 3-meter board on Friday night.

Inside The Results

  • Kuramoto tallied 471.75 points after 11 dives to top the list of 22 competitors on the 3-meter diving board.
  • Senior Emilia Schwallie placed fourth on the 3-meter board with a score of 449.70.
  • Sophomore Kyndall Tatum hit 378.80 points to place 16th on the 3-meter.
  • Kuramoto followed Friday's performance with a third-place effort on Saturday on the 1-meter board with 457.10 points.
  • Schwallie placed 16th on the 1-meter board with 378.50 points but still earned an NCAA bid by virtue of her fourth-place showing on Friday and Kuramoto and Ithaca's Karalyn Pawcio placing in the top three on both boards.
  • Tatum finished her season with a 20th-place showing on the 1-meter board with 362.85 points.

  • Region 4 sends seven divers to the NCAA Championships based on having 22 competitors in the region.
  • Kuramoto's win on the 3-meter marks the first regional championship for a Tartan women's diver.
  • Kuramoto will make her first appearance on the national stage.
  • Schwallie will also make her first appearance but qualified as a freshman in 2020 before the championship meet was canceled.
  • This marks the first time two women divers have advanced to the NCAA Championships since 2004-05 when Mindi Finnegan placed ninth on the 1-meter and 12th on the 3-meter and Julia Pavia placed fourth on the 3-meter and 10th on the 1-meter.
