Xu Closes NCAA Championships with All-America Finish

(GREENSBORO, N.C.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team concluded action at the 2023 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday, March 18 with freshman Savannah Xu earning All-America honors. The Tartans placed 15th with 68 points, tying for the highest-ever finish and with the most points recorded at the championship meet.

Xu placed sixth in the 200-yard backstroke to complete the individual honors for the Tartans and earned her first career All-America honor touching the wall in 2:00.78. Xu reached the championship final with a 2:00.40 time in the preliminaries after being seeded ninth heading into the event.

The 400-yard freestyle relay closed the meet for the Tartans with a 14th-place finish to earn points and All-America Honorable Mention status. The quartet of senior Tiffany Tseng, freshman Eliana Szabo, freshman Grace Malinger, and senior Mathea Myhrvold combined for a time of 3:28.99 in the preliminaries to reach the finals while Tseng, Szabo, Malinger, and Xu finished the final in 3:28.69.

  • Xu is the sixth Tartan to finish in the top 16 in the 200-yard backstroke and second to place in the top eight.
  • Xu is the third freshman under head coach Matthew Kinney to earn a championship trophy.
  • The 400-yard freestyle All-America Honorable Mention honor is the first earned for the program with the 2020 team receiving the accolades when the College Swimming Coaches Association of America awarded all 2020 invitees with the honor when the meet was canceled due to COVID-19.
  • This meet marks the first time three relays earned points
