#11 Tartans Down #8 Brandeis In Third-Place Match at UAA Championship

(ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.) - The 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team finished third at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday with a 5-0 win over eighth-ranked Brandeis University. The Tartans end their regular season with an overall mark of 17-7.

The Tartans third doubles team of senior Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio / Mayfield) and freshman Janabelle Wu (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) started the scoring with an 8-3 win. The second doubles tandem of juniors Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and Courtney Ollis (Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) won by the identical score to make the score 2-0 Carnegie Mellon.

The number one doubles pair of sophomore Melissa Strome (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and freshman Danna Taylor (Orlando, Fla. / Circle Christian School) completed the sweep in doubles play with an 8-7 (5) victory.

Wu then made the score 4-0 with a straight set win at fourth singles winning, 6-0, 6-2. Freshman Beata Liberchuk (Edgewater, N.J. / Dwight-Englewood) clinched the match for the Cardinal and Gray with a 6-2, 6-2 win at sixth singles.

The Tartans will now wait to hear news of entrance to the NCAA Championship which will be announced next week.
