Tartans Win Twice in Florida

(ORLANDO, Fla.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked 11th in the nation, played its first contests of spring break in Orlando, Florida on Tuesday, March 7. The Tartans opened play with a 6-3 victory against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and closed the day with a 6-1 victory against NAIA University of St. Francis (Illinois) to move to 10-3 on the season.

Inside the Results

  • The Tartans won two of three doubles matches against RPI.
  • Freshman Manuela Van Cotthem earned match point against RPI with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at fourth singles.
  • The Tartans swept doubles play against St. Francis to earn the doubles point per NAIA scoring.
  • Sophomore Crystal Zhou won match point against St. Francis with a 6-1, 6-1 win at second singles.
  • Junior Danna Taylor and Zhou won twice at first doubles: 8-6 vs. RPI and 6-0 vs. St. Francis.
  • Sophomore Sarah Yang, Zhou, Van Cotthem each won two singles matches on the day.
  • Van Cotthem paired with senior Bin Zheng to win twice at doubles.

The Tartans will have Wednesday, March 8 off before playing another set of matches on Thursday, March 9 at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. against N.C. Wesleyan and 27th-ranked Kenyon College.
