#18 Tartans Down #20 Christopher Newport

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked 18th in Division III, played 20th-ranked Christopher Newport University on Sunday afternoon at the University of Mary Washington. The Tartans improved their dual record to 10-4 with an 8-1 win over Christopher Newport who is now 9-5.

How it Happened:

  • For the second straight match, the Tartans swept double play to take a 3-0 lead into singles play.
  • Junior Zoe Angell and senior Danna Taylor claimed the first point with an 8-4 win at first doubles followed by an 8-6 win at third doubles by sophomore Anika Joshi and junior Sarah Yang.
  • The final double point came by the Tartans second pair of sophomores Anna Chow and Divya Venkatarama, as the duo claimed an 8-6 win.
  • Taylor took the first point in singles play to give the Tarans a 4-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at second singles.
  • Freshman Ainika Hou sealed the win with a 6-3, 6-3 decision at five singles.
  • Also, recording singles wins for the Tartans on Sunday afternoon were Angell with a straight set victory at four, Venkatarama at three and Yang at the top spot.  

Notes

  • The Tartans have now swept doubles play six times this season.
  • The Cardinal and Gray defeated Christopher Newport for the second time this season and have won all seven matches against the Captains in the all-time series.
