Tartans Advance to Semifinals at ITA Regionals

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team traveled to the University of Mary Washington for the ITA Southeast Regionals. The Tartans competed in the first two days of competition on Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22. 

Singles Play

  • Freshman Ancele Dolensek won 6-3, 6-0 in the round 16, before winning the quarterfinals match when her opponent, Lauren Long of Washington and Lee University, had to retire before the match.
  • Freshman Shelly Zinchenko won 6-1, 6-1 in round 16, and advanced to quarterfinals where she also won by an opponent retirement. Zinchenko forced a third set against Ava Li of Johns Hopkins and eventually won 3-6, 6-3, 2-4 (ret).
  • Dolensek and Zinchenko will play each other in the quarterfinals on Monday.
  • Freshman Joycie Lu won in rounds 64 and 32 on Saturday, before falling in the round 16 on Sunday to Long in a third set tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-2, 7-10. 

Doubles Play

  • Zinchenko and junior Anna Chow won 8-4 in quarterfinals and advanced to semifinals.
  • Dolensek and junior Divya Venkatarama won their round of 16 match, 8-5, before falling in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
  • Junior Anika Joshi and sophomore Ainika Hou won 8-4 on Saturday in the round 32, before falling in the round of 16 on Sunday.
  • Senior Zoe Angell and freshman Rachel Li won 8-1 in the round of 32, before falling in the round of 16.
