#12 Tartans Start Spring Trip with a Pair of Victories

(ORLANDO, Fla.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked 12th in Division III, opened its spring trip with a pair of matches against two three Division II institutions, Saginaw Valley State University and University of Mary on Monday. The Tartans won 6-1 over Saginaw Valley before beating Mary 7-0. The Tartans are now 7-0 in dual action.
Inside the Results Against Saginaw Valley:
- Saginaw Valley took the point in doubles play with victories at first and third spots. The Tartans tandem of juniors Divya Venkatarama and Anika Joshi won 6-2 at second doubles.
- The Tartans then swept singles play for the victory with freshman Shelly Zinchenko clinching the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win at two singles.
- The first point in singles was won by freshman Victoria Gazda at five as she won 6-3, 6-1.
- Senior Sarah Yang then won 6-3, 6-4 at the top spot followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win by Venkatarama at four singles.
- A 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory then came at six singles by freshman Joycie Lu with the final point of the match coming at the three spot where freshman Ancele Dolensek won 7-5, 7-6 (4).
Inside the Results Against Mary:
- Carnegie Mellon swept doubles play to collect the point. Venkatarama and Dolensek won 6-0 at two, freshman Rachel Li and Joshi won 6-2 at three and senior Zoe Angell and junior Anna Chow won 6-3 at one.
- Joshi took the first point in singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win at six followed by Lu winning at five by the scores of 6-1, 6-1.
- Angell then won at 6-3, 6-0 at four and junior Manuela Van Cotthem won 6-2, 6-3 at three.
- Gazda, playing two singles, recorded a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (7) win while Zinchenko, who played at the top spot, also recorded a three-set victory by the scores of 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (7).
